Hospitals Practicing Birth Kangaroo Care
Birth kangaroo care is the practice of placing infants in skin to skin contact on mom's chest within the first
few minutes after birth.  Holding an infant in kangaroo care immediately after delivery helps the baby
stabilize more quickly than if they are placed in a warmer.  Research shows that babies placed in
kangaroo care tend to have more stable heart rates, respiration rates, temperatures, blood sugars, and
they learn to breastfeed easier.  Parents and family members can continue to do kangaroo care at home.
Babies get better quality sleep and cry less often when they are held in kangaroo care.  As a result they
reap the benefit of better brain development!
