What is a CLC or CLS?
Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) and Certified Lactation Specialist are not professional
designations, but rather a person who has successfully completed a 40 hour course of
training and received a certificate.  No credential in lactation expands practice parameters.
These are set by licensing and sometimes by community standards.  The CLC or CLS, like all
certificates of added qualification, carries no regulatory authority for licensure.  All health
professionals should seek out information about how this certificate relates to licensure,
accreditation or employment opportunity in their community.

These types of training courses are generally intended to be a step toward becoming an
IBCLC.
